4 Introducing the Kitten Foster Project

POSTED BY Jennifer P. IN

Kitten season is that time of year when winter turns to spring and baby kittens are born.  Unfortunately, it’s not as cute and magical as it sounds because many of these tiny creatures will find their way into an animal shelter.  Because most shelters do not have the human power or financial resources to care for these little ones, they are often euthanized within hours of intake if no foster is found.  As popular as cats and kittens are on the internet nowadays, ironically, they are still among the most euthanized groups in animal shelters.

The good news is that…

10 Onward & Upward: Simple Ways to help Shelter Pets in 2014

POSTED BY Anne C IN

Have you started setting your lofty goals for 2014 yet? Here are 10 simple ways you can help shelter animals in the coming year.
1. Donate Your Unwanted Towels: Old or new, animals don’t care.  Shelters use towels for cleaning, cozying up a pet’s kennel and even taming semi-feral kittens!  If you received a fresh set this December, consider donating your old towels to your local shelter.
2. Likewise with Old Blankets: Shelters are always in need of blankets. You can donate your used blankets or make new fleece blankets for a fun project like the industrious little ladies of…

POSTED BY Cassie R. IN

animal volunteers receiving awards

On Sunday, Oct. 27th, we had the privilege of honoring our trusted volunteers at the 4th Annual Found Animals’ Volunteer Appreciation Party.  Our volunteers are the backbone of our Foundation.  With over 22,000 service hours contributed so far in 2013 alone, our life-saving programs would not be possible without the generous contributions of our amazing volunteers.
Due to their selfless contributions, 95 of our volunteers were awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award.  This award is designed to honor and recognize volunteers across the nation and recipients receive a service pin, certificate, and a signed letter from the President.

5 Kitten Season Purrs On: Become a Foster Volunteer Today

POSTED BY Jennifer P. IN

I was once at an animal welfare conference where one of the speakers told a joke that I will never forget.  She spoke about her shelter’s experience when their “Kitten Season“ rolled around.  She had casually thrown out the term to an unsuspecting adopter one day.  After seeing the horror on his face she knew she had said something that offended him.  When she asked him why he was so upset he replied, “I didn’t know there was a hunting season for cats.”
She quickly realized that he was right.  We animal welfare people know the term all too well,…

3 How Pet Programs in Assisted Living Facilities Can Help Animals in Shelters

August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day, a day designated to honor our elders, and of course, we at Found Animals extend our love to senior cats and dogs as well. The day reminds us to call our older family members to show our appreciation, to volunteer to help an elderly neighbor, and to soak up the reservoir of wisdom accumulated from years of experience from generations before us.
The day also reminds us that shelters have many senior animals who need homes. Older cats and dogs in shelters have a much smaller chance of getting out alive compared to…

Fostering kittens is a great way to make a difference for animals in your community.  Kittens are adorable, playful and full of happiness and energy from the tip of their baby noses to the toes on their tiny paws. Opening your home to foster kittens may seem like daunting task, but the rewards far outweigh the challenges. If you have ever thought about becoming a foster parent, now is the time when the animal shelters really need you. Here are our top 5 reasons why fostering is fantastic.
1)   Kittens are Therapeutic: Kittens will put a smile on your face.…

Volunteer Appreciation Week - 3 Year Anniversary

April 2013 marks the three year anniversary of the Found  Animals Foundation’s Volunteer Program! We are incredibly thankful for the days, months, and years that our volunteers have graciously contributed to our life-saving  programs.

Now our team of dedicated volunteers is up to 186 active members who contribute hours on a weekly basis. With the Adopt & Shop Mission Viejo and Culver City  locations underway, we project that our volunteer family will nearly double by…

Found Animals Year in Review 2012

POSTED BY Aimee G. IN

Found Animals employees

2012 has been an amazing year for the Found Animals Foundation team and as we take time to reflect and celebrate this holiday season we wanted to share some of our accomplishments and plans for the New Year.  Since our mission is to minimize the number of pets killed in shelters, we focus on programs that reduce shelter intake and increase live release rates.  All told, over 130,000 pets and their people were helped by Found Animals programs this year and we look forward to seeing that number grow dramatically next year.  None of this would be possible without the…
