Volunteer Appreciation Party 2012

POSTED BY Cassie R. IN

Volunteer Appreciation Party

On Sunday, October 28th, we had the honor of hosting our 3rd annual Volunteer Appreciation Party at the Rio Hondo Events Center in Downey, CA. With 150 guests of honor (also known as Found Animals volunteers), we gathered to give thanks to the people that make our life-saving programs possible.
Year to date, the Found Animals volunteers have contributed over 13,000 hours to help support our administrative staff, Spay4LA program, special events, Cat Adoption Center, and Adopt & Shop.  Their selfless contributions of time earned our appreciation plus the national recognition with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Recipients received a…

2 brown dogs getting married

This guest blog was written by one of our fabulous volunteers, Brittany G.
Halloween is just around the corner, and nowadays it’s not just the kids dressing up in costume. Every year we see more and more pets being disguised as ghoulish, mythical creatures, and pop culture icons. With so many generic Halloween costumes flooding the pet stores this season, the ultimate question comes down to, “What will my furry friend be this year?” Granted, you could easily pick up the local bumblebee costume, equipped with wings and antenna, from the local pet supply, but don’t you want your pet…

How I Ended Up with Chickens…

2 white turlock hens

I love eating eggs,  but after California voters passed Proposition 2 in 2008 to increase the standards of protection for poultry animals, I learned a lot about the plight of egg laying hens on commercial egg farms. I swore off of eggs for a bit while searching for specialty health stores where I could buy eggs with a “Certified Humane” label.  I began to dream of one day owning my own egg laying hens.
Fast forward to February 2012.  A news story broke about a central California poultry farm where 50,000 chickens were abandoned for more than two weeks.  Animal…

Happy World Animal Day!

golden cow hanging in the sky

Every year on October 4th, animal lovers from every country celebrate World Animal Day.  World Animal Day is the celebration of animal life in every form, started in Florence, Italy in 1931 by a group of ecologists at a convention, it’s original purpose was to bring awareness to threatened and endangered species.  It is celebrated on October 4th because that day is the feasting day reserved for Saint Francis of Assisi.  If the name of Saint Francis does not sound familiar to you, you may recognize him in statue form.  Statues of him are often placed in gardens where he…

Tales from the Cat Show 2012

POSTED BY Annie M IN

This weekend I attended my first cat show, A Cat Fanciers’ Association All Breed Cat Show,  hosted by the Santa Monica Cat Club. I wasn’t sure what to expect really. I wanted to learn more about the pure breed cat lover set, and I think a CFA show was a perfect first timer choice. The Cat Fanciers Association is a non profit founded in 1906 with their very first cat show taking place in New York in 1907, 105 years ago!
According to them, “CFA is known as the Fairest, Friendliest and most Fun feline association.”  Their goal is to…

monkey hugging a dove

Are your household pets literally “fighting like cats and dogs?” Does your dog constantly chase your poor cat up a tree? Think it just can’t be any different? Well, in honor of National Friendship Day, we’ve put together a few tips for these situations, and we’ll show you just how possible it is for your furry family members to get along. But first, let’s take a look at some remarkable stories of animals befriending – and in some cases, even adopting – an animal from a completely different species.
Like the time this baby chimp joined a litter of puppies…

The Mishaps of an Adventurous Dog

black and white dog in the forest

I know my parents love me to death and this is why I also know they’ve been pretty close to having heart attacks many times since I came into their lives. I am, what humans would call, very adventurous and I laugh in the face of danger. This has gotten me into a considerable amount of trouble in the past seven years of my existence. Here’s just a snippet of the many things I’ve experienced while on adventure with the most awesomest parents in the world!

Fell in a frozen pond:
I am originally from Washington and I introduced my…
