Written By: April H.
Many of us have heard the famous quote by Albert Einstein “If you always do what you always did, you will always get the what you always got.”  If there was one theme to the symposium at the SAWA 2014 Annual Conference this year, it was challenging our current ideas and beliefs in the animal welfare industry.
For those of you that were not able to attend, the National Council on Pet Population Research Symposium sponsored presentation after presentation that focused primarily on the impact and application of Behavioral Science in animal shelters.  It is rare…

World Animal Day was established in 1931 by a group of ecologists in Florence Italy as a way to highlight the plight of endangered species.  Nearly 85 years later, World Animal Day is now celebrated in every country and has expanded to include all animals, large and small, wild and domesticated, and the impact they have on our lives.

The date of October 4th was chosen to coincide with The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.  Every country observes this holiday in their own unique way with festivities ranging from animal welfare-centric spelling bees for…

Battling Food Allergies with My Canine Companion

Back in 2008 when I first met my pet daughter “Bella,” a Pomeranian, I realized we shared a few things in common. We both have food allergies to certain proteins, like beef and lamb, and we both have very sensitive stomachs. She was not in great shape when I rescued her. During her first vet visit, our vet determined she was 11-months-old, had poor coat quality, major allergies, and was malnourished from the litter she’d just had less than a month prior. Below you can see the picture I took when we first met.
I started feeding her a lamb…

NKLA Pet Adoption Center

On August 1st,  NKLA, a Best Friends Animal Society initiative comprised of over 60 local nonprofits, opened their first Pet Adoption Center in West Los Angeles, CA.

A few of us Found Animals staffers attended their soft-opening, took a tour of their beautiful new space and got to hang out with some of the adorable dogs and cats awaiting adoption.
The adoption center is spectacular.  An 11,000 square foot, Cape Cod-style facility with lots of amenities:  brightly lit with skylights, soundproof kennels, a grooming and picture taking area, meet and greet rooms, a cozy community cat room and a large…

On Sunday, June 23rd, the Found Animals Foundation hosted a continuing education workshop on animal behavior and safety for our current active animal volunteers.  At this fun-filled, interactive workshop, Jessica Johnson, the Found Animals Foundation’s Behavior Specialist was able to address the many safety and behavior issues that our current volunteers are faced with on a regular basis.
The workshop topics ranged from how to train basic commands such as sit, lay, stay and loose leash walking to proper restraint of a cat or dog while administering medications or trimming nails.  All those in attendance were sent home with a…

Managing the Cat Crisis Wrap Up

Dr. Kate Hurley speaks at the Managing the Cat Crisis event

Cats continue to face disproportionate challenges in animal shelters and have a 70% chance of euthanasia in the average California Shelter. However, change is on the horizon. Last Tuesday, June 11th, Found Animals and Orange County Animal Care had the wonderful opportunity to host a unique Speakers Forum Event called “Managing the Cat Crisis.”
We were excited to have nationally recognized animal care experts including Jon Cicirelli and Dr. Kate Hurley speak about how to understand the reasons behind these staggering numbers and what alternative cat programs and shelter management techniques can be utilized to make a difference.
The event…
