I know you’ve heard this all before but stars really are just like us.  Many stars are huge animal-lovers and they do a lot of work raising money, awareness and even getting right into the animal rescue world to get their hands dirty. Working in the animal realm, we see how one well-placed tweet, Facebook post, ad campaign or recommendation from a celebrity can be a major tipping point that helps organizations and their animals. So we are saying a special thank you to celebs who have given black cats a shout out!
Since it’s National Black Cat Day, let’s…

5 Myths About Senior Pets – Destroyed

POSTED BY Estelle W. IN

Babies drool; seniors rule. Senior pets, that is. Personally, I love me some frosted snouts. There is just something heartwarming about seeing an older dog or cat with years of wisdom written into the sprinkling of white on snout or coat.
Why do senior pets rule over their younger counterparts? First let’s define what a senior actually is. For cats, senior status is reached between 8-10 years of age; for small dogs around 7, and for large dogs; 5. So we’re not talking ancient, just mature. And maturity is the thing. They have dignity. Decorum. They know who they are…

Cats are the unlucky bearers of a very unfortunate distinction in our local shelters: most likely to be euthanized. In the year ending June 2015, LA Animal Services reports that 6,862 cats were euthanized, and of those, 4,011 (or 58%) were unweaned kittens. As discouraging as these numbers are, they are improving year by year due to the hard work and dedication of shelter staff, rescues and volunteers. But more help is needed, so we are asking you to get involved through one of these 5 ways to help save kittens.

Adopt Kittens and Save Twice the Lives!

Kitten Foster

Did you know that cats are the number one euthanized pets in our animal shelters? According to ASPCA statistics, “of cats entering shelters, approximately 37% are adopted, 41% are euthanized, and less than 5% who come in as strays are returned to their owners.” At Adopt & Shop, we want to change those numbers, so for a limited time, we are offering two kittens for one adoption fee and 50% off adult cats.
Why Adopt Two Kittens?
When you adopt kittens two at a time, it benefits both of you because:

Adopt Kittens

Written by Gabi G.
“Kitten Season” is that time of year when the weather warms up and unaltered female cats go into heat, get pregnant, and give birth. Here in Southern California, with our mild climate and overabundant stray cat population, we have an extended season that traditionally picks up in March and continues all the way through October.
It was, therefore, no surprise to the Adopt & Shop Kitten Foster Project team when we received our first call of the season from a shelter partner at the beginning of February. They had just received a heavily pregnant female cat,…

When you see a cute puppy in the window of a pet store, your first thought is probably not where that puppy came from.  That’s why many people don’t know that puppies offered for sale at a typical pet store, in the classifieds, or online, often come from puppy mills.
Puppy mills are an issue that we at Found Animals care deeply about.  So much so that we have been an integral part of bringing “humane model” pet retail into our Los Angeles communities.  A “humane model” pet store is one that pulls healthy, adoptable pets from local shelters to…

2 Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable Pet Week: Adopt & Shop Promotion

POSTED BY Annie M IN

Petfinder has designated the third week in September “Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable Pet Week” to raise awareness about animals in our shelters and rescues who need a little extra help finding the right home.
According to their survey, 99% of national shelters and rescue groups currently have adoptable pets that are having a difficult time getting adopted. These overlooked pets wait for a home nearly four times longer than the average adoptable pet does, sometimes remaining at (no-kill) shelters for longer than two years!
We have found this to be true at both our Adopt & Shop locations. There is a special kind…
