Microchip Monday: Match Me If You Can

“My pets never leave my side.” “The neighbors all know Fido.” “Whiskers is indoor-only.” These are a few common reasons we hear from pet owners who don’t think microchipping is important.

Many owners believe that their pets are so popular, everyone in town would recognize them and bring them home, making ID tags and microchips unnecessary. However, many municipal shelters serve thousands of animals each year. The odds that local animal care professionals know every lab or tabby cat by sight are pretty slim… even if yours is the cutest.

Lost pets may also look different than they do at home, they could be dirty, wet, missing hair (or extra shaggy, if they skipped that haircut), they may have lost or gained weight, they may be behaving strangely due to stress in a new environment, we have even seen a lost dog found missing an eye!

Believe it or not, you may not even recognize your own pet in the shelter! Some precocious pets turn up thousands of miles from home, after being lost for years! In all of these cases, a visible pet ID tag and registered microchip are your pet’s only chance at finding you, once someone has found them.

The best way to make any point is with adorable animal photos, so here are some real examples of pets hiding in plain sight, “then and now.” Can you pick these pets out of the lineup? Take a guess… then scroll down for the answers.

As a young pup, Rio had a heck of a chase drive. After being hit by a car he was rescued by a good Samaritan and brought to a veterinarian 30 miles away. With no identification, he was classified as “lost”.

Can you match the adult dog with the puppy at the time he went missing?

Dodger came to us from Adopt and Shop full of puppy spunk, and his mom made sure he was microchipped and wore visible ID tags right away.

Now Dodger visits our doggy daycare and shows younger dogs the ropes. It really tuckers him out! Can you spot this dog as he looks now?

I got Rio, Pete and Sugar. One of my cats (indoor) is chipped, the other one isn’t yet, but will be soon. Both are registered on Found Animals.

  2. Zoe' says:

3 of 4. Got Rio, Pete & Dodger, but was clueless on Sugar. My Maggie (age 15) & Riley (dogs) and Callie & Blackie (cats) are all microchipped and have ID tags. Three are rescues & Blackie I was keeping temporarily while her owners relocated. That was 8 years ago!

  3. Lorena says:

    Yay!,….got 4 out of 4,…All correct!

  4. Wesley says:

I was able to get 3 out of 4 and I have my dog chipped because I love her. I just hope no one keeps her because she is really sweet. What kind of dog is Rio?

    • Annie M says:

That’s great Wesley! Rio is a shepherd, pit bull? mix with a little bit of chow and probably some other breeds in there too :)

  5. Dana says:

Got 3 Out of 4. The last one didn’t show the head/face stripes, so it was too hard to tell. Always, always chip every animal!
And don’t forget to check on the chip every few years. Some travel in the body and can no longer be scanned. I have a dog with 2 chips now.

  6. I guessed the dogs correctly. I don’t know cats welkl enough to tell them apart.

  7. Irma says:

Got them all right…but I agree the lost postings people post don’t even come close to providing enough info to identify pets. Both my dogs are microchipped and registered on Found Animals.

  8. Linda E. says:

I got 3 out of 4!! All of my three babies (2 boys/1 girl) are micro chipped & rescues.. Even though they’re indoor cats I feel better, just in case. They all have a 10 word vocabulary that they understand, which includes lay down. HAHAHAHA.

  9. Charlena Mettler says:

4 Out Of 4 The Last One Was A Little More Tricky Though. I Have Both Of My Kitties Chipped And Glad I Do So If They Ever Get Lost They Have A Better Chance To Make It Back Home

  10. LeoladyAZ says:

Zero. I did not get a single one.

  11. Larissa says:

I got 3. But thank God we have all of ours microchiped.i had a cat escape in California. 8 years later at a garage sale in Canada on the east coast a kitty cuddled up to me. The lady was astounded. That cats scared of everyone she said. It just showed up here days ago. So skinny so terrified. Please take it..so i did. Off to the vet we went where the chip Scan verified it was my missing Salem. I didn’t even recognize Salem…. And i was astounded. 8 years and thousands of miles to show up at a random yard sale. We had another 6 years together before he left for the rainbow bridge.
So if you don’t believe in the power of love and microchips….

    • Rhonda says:

Wow! What are the odds! You two were meant to be with each other for a reason that I guess would only be known by the universe! I’ll bet he never tried to escape again! What a beautiful love story!

  12. Susan says:

I got Rio and Pete right! But here’s the thing…it shows how important it is to have a RECENT picture of your pet – eyes open and alert! I couldn’t identify the sleepy ones! My two cats, who are indoor cats, are chipped. God/dess help me if one of them should ever escape!!!

    Off to take recent pictures……………………..

  13. Beth says:

I actually got all four. The noses were the giveaway for me.

  14. Dan says:

2 out of 4!! I knew the doggies but not the cats. Too close in color for me. I’ve always had my pets chipped, and luckily never had to worry about them being lost and needing it. ;-)

  15. Andrea says:

Got three of four. Missed the first one but even knew that b&c were the same, but this really does shine some light. I’m glad my babies have chips!
