“My pets never leave my side.” “The neighbors all know Fido.” “Whiskers is indoor-only.” These are a few common reasons we hear from pet owners who don’t think microchipping is important.
Many owners believe that their pets are so popular, everyone in town would recognize them and bring them home, making ID tags and microchips unnecessary. However, many municipal shelters serve thousands of animals each year. The odds that local animal care professionals know every lab or tabby cat by sight are pretty slim… even if yours is the cutest.
Lost pets may also look different than they do at home, they could be dirty, wet, missing hair (or extra shaggy, if they skipped that haircut), they may have lost or gained weight, they may be behaving strangely due to stress in a new environment, we have even seen a lost dog found missing an eye!
Believe it or not, you may not even recognize your own pet in the shelter! Some precocious pets turn up thousands of miles from home, after being lost for years! In all of these cases, a visible pet ID tag and registered microchip are your pet’s only chance at finding you, once someone has found them.
The best way to make any point is with adorable animal photos, so here are some real examples of pets hiding in plain sight, “then and now.” Can you pick these pets out of the lineup? Take a guess… then scroll down for the answers.
As a young pup, Rio had a heck of a chase drive. After being hit by a car he was rescued by a good Samaritan and brought to a veterinarian 30 miles away. With no identification, he was classified as “lost”.
Can you match the adult dog with the puppy at the time he went missing?
Peanut the kitten came from Adopt and Shop and became a staff favorite. Now that he’s grown, “Pete” still keeps that boyish charm. Can you pick him out of the cat crowd?
Dodger came to us from Adopt and Shop full of puppy spunk, and his mom made sure he was microchipped and wore visible ID tags right away.
Now Dodger visits our doggy daycare and shows younger dogs the ropes. It really tuckers him out! Can you spot this dog as he looks now?
Sugar was rescued from a construction site by some friendly workers. Nowadays the only “work” she does is working up an appetite… by napping…
Which sleepy shorthair says “Sugar” to you?
