National Mutt Day is one of our favorite pet holidays around here because it gives us an extra excuse to talk about the magnificent mixed breed dog! It is estimated that 25% of dogs that enter shelters annually are purebreds and the rest mixed, which equals millions of mutts that need us humans to step up and say, “I don’t know what you are exactly, but I love ya, so I don’t care.”
National Mutt Day was created in 2005 by Celebrity Pet Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige to “raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the nation and to educate the public about the sea of mixed breed dogs that desperately await new homes.”
Since opening our first Adopt & Shop in Lakewood, CA in 2011, we have assisted more than 3,000 dogs in their journey from animal shelter to home. Every single one of these dogs was an individual and each one has left a permanent paw print on our life.
There are an estimated 17 million “swing” adopters out there (people who could adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue, or buy from a breeder — they haven’t quite decided yet). One of the best ways to reach out to this group is by sharing our own personal stories. All of the individuals who have adopted dogs are on-the-ground ambassadors for the mighty mutt!
We asked past adopters to send us some updated pictures via Adopt & Shop’s Facebook page and we dug through the archives to find their “before” pictures.
Thank you to all the adopters who shared current pictures and updates of their mutts. We are so grateful they chose adoption and we hope their friends and family, after seeing what wonderful dogs they have, will choose adoption as well.
