POSTED BY Annie M IN

Adopting a new pet is an extremely exciting event. It can also be an anxious time as it takes a little while for new animals to settle in and form a comfortable routine. Inevitably, there is a lot of new information to take in and one thing that needs to be dealt with after adoption is your new pet’s microchip!

99% of the time, animals adopted from shelters or rescues will already be microchipped by the facility. But what about the registration? This part really differs from group to group but we have one course of action you should follow,…

Stamping out Suffering: Puppy Mill Awareness Day

When you see a cute puppy in the window of a pet store, your first thought is probably not where that puppy came from.  That’s why many people don’t know that puppies offered for sale at a typical pet store, in the classifieds, or online, often come from puppy mills.
Puppy mills are an issue that we at Found Animals care deeply about.  So much so that we have been an integral part of bringing “humane model” pet retail into our Los Angeles communities.  A “humane model” pet store is one that pulls healthy, adoptable pets from local shelters to…

Petfinder has designated the third week in September “Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable Pet Week” to raise awareness about animals in our shelters and rescues who need a little extra help finding the right home.
According to their survey, 99% of national shelters and rescue groups currently have adoptable pets that are having a difficult time getting adopted. These overlooked pets wait for a home nearly four times longer than the average adoptable pet does, sometimes remaining at (no-kill) shelters for longer than two years!
We have found this to be true at both our Adopt & Shop locations. There is a special kind…

It’s that time of year again! Dogust the 1st, celebrated every August 1st, is the universal birthday for all shelter and rescue dogs with unknown dates of birth. Last year, our volunteers surprised our adoptable dogs at Adopt & Shop with some special treats and they loved it so much, we did the same this year for our Lakewood and Culver City pups.
Thanks to Daisy with Lucky Dog Bakery for baking these adorable mini birthday cakes!

Happy Mutt’s Day!

white and grey mixed breed dog

National Mutt Day is one of our favorite pet holidays around here because it gives us an extra excuse to talk about the magnificent mixed breed dog! It is estimated that 25% of dogs that enter shelters annually are purebreds and the rest mixed, which equals millions of mutts that need us humans to step up and say, “I don’t know what you are exactly, but I love ya, so I don’t care.”
National Mutt Day was created in 2005 by Celebrity Pet Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige to “raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs…

118 Saying Goodbye to Your Dog: How to Know When It’s Time

POSTED BY Estelle W. IN

footparints and pawprints in the sand

For every person who loves and shares their life with a dog, the dreaded and inevitable day will come.  The day when you question whether or not to intervene in how and when your dog’s life will end. The first time for me was two and a half years ago, when I had to make the decision for my dog, Rex. One day, he was his normal, happy self – a little stiff in the backend as 11 year old German Shepherds can be, but otherwise healthy.  The next day, he was lethargic, not interested in food or water, and…

People sometimes ask us where these blog ideas come from. The truth is, wonderful readers, that you are our microchip muses! Your questions and comments inspire all of our posts. We meet every week to review common questions and brainstorm future blogs and resources we can provide. It’s a…

National Specially-Abled Pets day is observed every year on May 3rd and was founded in 2006 by Animal Behaviorist and Pet Lifestyle Expert, Colleen Paige. The goal of this holiday is to celebrate the animals who amaze us with how they cope with challenges brought on by birth flaws, disease or injuries. National Specially-Abled Pets Day also encourages potential adopters to consider adopting a special needs pet.
If the internet has taught us anything, it’s that people are really inspired by these animals! Watching them flourish in the face of…
