Adopt Kittens

Written by Gabi G.
“Kitten Season” is that time of year when the weather warms up and unaltered female cats go into heat, get pregnant, and give birth. Here in Southern California, with our mild climate and overabundant stray cat population, we have an extended season that traditionally picks up in March and continues all the way through October.
It was, therefore, no surprise to the Adopt & Shop Kitten Foster Project team when we received our first call of the season from a shelter partner at the beginning of February. They had just received a heavily pregnant female cat,…

Special Kitten Report | February 2015

Arbor is so vivacious!

We have two very special kittens to share with the world!
Meet Arbor:
I’m Arbor and I am 3 months old! I came to Adopt & Shop from Long Beach Animal Services.  My ear is clipped and I had to have my tail amputated;  I don’t let that stop me from loving the hoomans.  I love to play and be pet!  Adopt & Shop has been my home for the past week, but I’d love a permanent loving home!
Will you SHARE my story, and help me find my FURever home? Visit me at Adopt & Shop-Culver City or call…

Kitten season is over. But tax season has just begun!

So, maybe you think that kittens are more fun than taxes. Perhaps your CPA is not as cute as a puppy. But knowing your rights under U.S. tax law can help you take care of homeless animals and save even more lives than ever.
Did you know that taxpayers can deduct some expenses related to fostering cats and dogs? In 2012, the United States Tax Court ruled that animal caregivers can deduct foster expenses, but there are a few important things to remember before you ask…

4 Kitten Foster Friday: Single Mother’s Club

This weekend (September 26th through the 28th) we will be waiving the adoption fee on all available adult cats at both Adopt & Shop locations. If you have been thinking about adoption, stop by and meet some of our incredible adult kitties in need of a good home!
As Annie M. pointed out in our #100KittyDays blog, it is not unheard of for California shelters to receive over one hundred kittens in a single day during the height of Kitten Season. With so many tiny, adorable balls of fluff in desperate need of help, it is easy to forget about…

Kitten Foster Friday: Ser Pounce’s Story

POSTED BY Jackie R IN

cat and dog napping together

This isn’t your typical “foster fail” story.  We weren’t even fostering Ser Pounce (initially named Indiana Jones).  We just agreed to watch him for the weekend while his foster was out of town.
Let’s start at the beginning of this love story. Once upon a time, I met Riley.  It was love at first sight.
It was love at first name with Ser Pounce.   We actually named him before he existed.   We were watching an episode of “Game of Thrones” (*spoiler alert)… the young king Tommen was speaking with Margaery and she asked the name of his cat.  “Ser Pounce!”,…

#100KittyDays

POSTED BY Annie M IN

tabby kitten

On June 11th of this year, Adopt & Shop launched an adorable campaign on their Instagram called 100 Kitty Days. As many of you know, Kitten Season is a phenomenon that happens every spring when the weather starts to warm, and hundreds of thousands upon millions of cats give birth all over the world. Even though little kittens are really, really cute, Kitten Season is anything but.
Our Kitten Foster Project manager, Jen, did a great job of explaining some of the finer points of Kitten Season in a blog we posted last September called, “Kitten Season Purrs On.”

Happy Take Your Dog to Work Day 2014

2 dogs sitting in their beds

One of the benefits of working in the animal welfare world is that our main office is pet-friendly. Having dogs in the office helps lower stress and also forces us out of our chairs for much-needed walks. We also have a couple cats that accompany their humans to the office. Though it takes a special kind of cat (one that enjoys car travel, and dogs, just to give you an idea) in the spring and summertime the office is also populated with foster kittens.
Bringing foster kittens to the office is encouraged because it helps with their overall socialization and…

4 Kitten Foster Friday: Coley’s Story

I used to have a very fast-paced career.  I worked in film, taught theater arts in a residency program, and I was a published playwright and author of several other projects.
All of this came to an abrupt stop when I was diagnosed with a degenerative nerve disease.  In and out of the hospital dozens of times, I found myself with way too much time on my hands.
When I was home bound for long periods, I often told my husband Rick that I wished there was a business that would bring you a basket of kittens that you could…

2 Kitten Foster Friday: Stephanie’s Story

2 kittens napping in a cat tree

Guest post by Stephanie S.
It was about three years ago that I saw a picture of the world’s cutest kittens on Facebook and immediately fell in love. Now, if you’re like me, you see photos of kitties online all the time – you might even fall in love with each and every one of them. But this time it was different. This time it was a litter of six unweaned babies that a friend of mine was fostering with their mama. These kittens would be available for adoption when they reached the appropriate age and size. These kittens could…

4 Introducing the Kitten Foster Project

Kitten season is that time of year when winter turns to spring and baby kittens are born.  Unfortunately, it’s not as cute and magical as it sounds because many of these tiny creatures will find their way into an animal shelter.  Because most shelters do not have the human power or financial resources to care for these little ones, they are often euthanized within hours of intake if no foster is found.  As popular as cats and kittens are on the internet nowadays, ironically, they are still among the most euthanized groups in animal shelters.

The good news is that…
