16 National Mutt Day: My Mutt is My Muse

POSTED BY Marianne B. IN

You know we love the mixed breeds over here at Found Animals! In observance of National Mutt Day, our newest blogger (who is also a really talented artist) Marianne, tells us a little about why her adopted dog Penelope is such a special girl.
I love my mutt Penelope because she has inspired me to return to my love of painting.  One of the first things I wanted to do once she was adopted was to paint this particular photo I had taken of her.  It was shot one of her first nights home with us.  I managed to capture…

Raced into Our Hearts

This is a blog post written and submitted by one of our readers. Share your pet adoption story.
Back in 2004 my wife and I were watching a show on Animal Planet called Animal Cops Miami. The SPCA had a surveillance van set up and were watching this dumpster in a parking lot. A pickup truck arrives, backs up to the dumpster, and 2 men get out and start throwing dozens of trash bags into the dumpster. In each bag was a greyhound from a racetrack, a racing dog that didn’t cut it.
Although we never owned a dog and…

5 Just Say NO to Puppy Mills!

POSTED BY Lindsay E. IN

The holidays are just around the corner, and you know what that means! It’s “buy your children an adorable puppy and tie a ridiculously large red bow around its neck” season! While Found Animals believes that adopting a pet for Christmas can be a perfect holiday gift (with the proper amount of forethought, of course!), consider the following before you head down to the mall (or browse the internet) to find your new furry family member:

  • According to the Humane Society of the United States, almost all pet store (and online) puppies come from puppy mills.  However, as public awareness

Finding Your Soul Mate

2 hands make a heart

You first see him while out on a casual run. You notice his puppy-dog eyes, his athleticism, his playfulness, and just his enthusiasm for life.
You ran into him again while out for lunch in your neighborhood. You saw that he was with the same woman when you saw him during your run. You see that he is doting on her every move, making sure she was comfortable and protected, and shows his affection towards her by having eyes only for her.
You think to yourself, ”Where can I find someone like him?” and “How was she so lucky to…

3 Puppy Mill Awareness Day

POSTED BY Lindsay E. IN

3 puppies don't shop adopt!

As some of you may know, this Saturday is Puppy Mill Awareness Day. We all know puppy mills are bad, so what else is there to be aware of?  A lot, actually.
It is widely accepted that roughly 3-4 million animals are put to sleep at U.S. shelters annually.  At the same time, estimates indicate that puppy mills produce roughly 4 million dogs per year.  It doesn’t take a mathematician to realize that these two figures are, unfortunately, related.
In addition to contributing to the pet overpopulation problem, puppy mills operate with little to no consideration for the well-being of…

A Dog Day Adoption Story

National Dog Day is August 26. It’s a day for us to recognize and appreciate the influence of dogs in our lives from heroic service dogs to housedogs, and I can’t help but be grateful for how perfect my dog Winston is for me. He is the epitome of what I think a dog should be. He loves attention from other people, but I know he loves me the best, which makes me feel so special knowing I’m the most important person in the world to him. It’s adorable how he’ll stand close to me, just barely touching me and…

3 Happy Dogust! I Baked You a Cake

POSTED BY Annie M IN

Did you know that August 1st is the universally celebrated birthday for all shelter and rescue dogs with unknown dates of birth?
To celebrate “Dogust” I decided to bake a birthday/congratulations on your new home cake for my friend and his newly adopted dog, a Falcor look-alike named Curtis.
I’ve never baked a dog cake before but I have made dog biscuits. I found making a dog cake much easier. It takes 45 minutes to make it, bake it and frost it.
Here’s what you need for the cake:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ¼ cup organic creamy

3 Small Dogs Totally Rock!

2 papillions

Don’t get me wrong—I love all dogs.  Bernese Mountain Dogs that like to use my legs as a bridge to walk under, Salukis to prance gracefully, Mastiffs that help me clean off the kitchen counters, Great Danes to practice my horseback riding…  But my heart belongs to the little fluffies.

I get a lot of flak for having such small, delicate little ones (I’m the handmaiden to two gorgeous rescue Papillons)—people accuse me of having cats that walk on leashes, of having accessories that eat, of owning Gizmo.  (BTW, that’s not a compliment people—my dogs are insulted to be compared…
