National Specially-Abled Pets day is observed every year on May 3rd and was founded in 2006 by Animal Behaviorist and Pet Lifestyle Expert, Colleen Paige. The goal of this holiday is to celebrate the animals who amaze us with how they cope with challenges brought on by birth flaws, disease or injuries. National Specially-Abled Pets Day also encourages potential adopters to consider adopting a special needs pet.
If the internet has taught us anything, it’s that people are really inspired by these animals! Watching them flourish in the face of…

4-kittens-napping

Adopt & Shop Lakewood celebrated their 3rd birthday on April 12th and, as we prepare to open the largest and grandest Adopt & Shop to date, we want to express our gratitude to the staff, volunteers, adopters, community supporters and our partner animal shelters, SEACCA, Long Beach Animal Care Services, Los Angeles Animal Services, and the County of Los Angeles Animal Care and Control, for making our little pet shop so successful!

If you aren’t familiar with the concept of Adopt & Shop, it is a simple one.  Take the pet store model of yesteryear, but instead of selling puppies…

Making Your New Adult Dog Feel at Home

POSTED BY Found Animals IN

Bringing home an adult dog from a shelter is an exciting time with some unique challenges.  Shelter dogs come from all backgrounds.  From dogs who were lost, to dogs given up for behavior issues, or because the owner was unwilling or unable to provide adequate care.  Consequently, dogs entering a new home may not behave the way you might expect “adult” dogs to act.

Housebreaking Issues with Adult Dogs
A dog who has not had a structured home environment may have no idea that your house doesn’t play double duty as a toilet.  Until they prove otherwise, it’s generally a…

23 A Sea of Beagles: Tucker’s Senior Dog Adoption Story

POSTED BY Jessica J IN

After my childhood dog, Gus, a bright, funny, loveable German Shepherd, passed away, my family and I were not ready for another long-term commitment.  We were too heartbroken to reattach ourselves so quickly to another dog for another 10+ years.  We were not exactly in the market for another dog when fate decided to intervene.
I had tagged along with a friend of mine to a beagle rescue to pick up a dog that he had just adopted, so I decided to walk around the kennels while he was finalizing his adoption.  That was when I saw Todd, a dirty,…

10 What Did Chocobot’s DNA Test Reveal?

POSTED BY Cassie R. IN

Le (pronounced “Lee”) was just a man on the hunt for the perfect dog. Due to his mother’s apprehension about dogs and concern about having pet hair all over her home, Le’s only exposure to pets as a child was Spike, his turtle, and the furry, friendly faces owned by all his neighbors and friends. Once he was of age, Le was careful to find an apartment of his own that would be suitable for him and his future dog. From that point, the puppy hunt was on!
Le was determined to find a dog with short, stubby legs, a…
