The Twelve Pets of Christmas

POSTED BY Estelle W. IN

All I want for Christmas is a happy home! Save $50 off our adoption fees this December.

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the shelter,
The Twelve Pets of Christmas were in need of a helper.
For although these Twelve Pets have so much to offer,
These groups are ignored when it comes to adopters.

Group One is adult cats, aged nine months and up.
Why adopt only kittens? They’re cute, but grow up!
Fully grown cats need forever homes too,
Could one of these cats make its new home with you?

The next group of pets (and this one astounds):
Big, lovable dogs weighing forty-plus pounds.

So we are saying a special thank you to celebs who have given black cats a shout out!
Since it’s National Black Cat Day, let’s…

Cats are the unlucky bearers of a very unfortunate distinction in our local shelters: most likely to be euthanized. In the year ending June 2015, LA Animal Services reports that 6,862 cats were euthanized, and of those, 4,011 (or 58%) were unweaned kittens. As discouraging as these numbers are, they are improving year by year due to the hard work and dedication of shelter staff, rescues and volunteers. But more help is needed, so we are asking you to get involved through one of these 5 ways to help save kittens.

Socialize Your Dog at Adopt & Shop’s Pack Play

Written by Chelsea B., Dog Trainer at Adopt & Shop
We all want our dogs to be able to socialize in a fun, positive way. Dog parks can vary greatly on the socialization a dog gets based on the time of day, the pet parents’ attentiveness, the dogs within the park, and even the weather. That’s why Adopt & Shop developed “Pack Play.” Pack Play is a great way to socialize your dog in a positive way while learning about your dog’s body language, play styles and how to encourage positive interactions. Pack play is supervised by a trainer and…

Kitten Foster

Did you know that cats are the number one euthanized pets in our animal shelters? According to ASPCA statistics, “of cats entering shelters, approximately 37% are adopted, 41% are euthanized, and less than 5% who come in as strays are returned to their owners.” At Adopt & Shop, we want to change those numbers, so for a limited time, we are offering two kittens for one adoption fee and 50% off adult cats.

Meet Our Groomer: Lisa

Koda - Before and After

Adopt & Shop Culver City is excited to welcome a new groomer to our dedicated team of staff members.  Meet Lisa!
Lisa’s passion for animals is evident in everything she does. She has two rescue dogs of her own – Whoopie, a pit bull/Labrador mix; and Reggae, an American Stafford mix.  She has also worked with shelter animals, which is what drew her to Adopt & Shop’s mission of rescuing shelter dogs and cats. Lisa was a long-time volunteer with Westside German Shepherd Rescue, where she groomed adoptable dogs to keep them looking their best. When a former shelter pet…

Huck Finn, Phoenix and Marley!

In honor of January being National Train Your Dog Month, we want to introduce you to our resident trainer and expert, Chelsea. We sat down with Chelsea for a little Q & A session so you can get to know her better.
Q: How did you become a dog trainer?
A: While attending Illinois State University, I took behavior modification classes.  In those classes I actually got to use my dog, Marley, as a test subject.  It reignited a passion that had begun when I was a child.  My grandfather encouraged my love of dogs by watching dog shows with…

Dating With Pets Contest | #DateFauxPaws

#DateFauxPaws

It was a warm evening, so when my date arrived to pick me up, I suggested we walk to the restaurant.
“Great,” he said, “I probably won’t even need this jacket.  Can I leave it here?”
Seeing through his ploy but not really minding, I hung his jacket over the back of a chair and off we went.
Everything had been going so well.  We’d had a nice dinner, great conversation, and there was definitely chemistry between us.  Until we got back to my apartment. The smell assaulted us as soon as I opened the door. “Ugh – what the…?”…

Last week, we posted a blog about “Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable Pet Week” and our upcoming Adopt & Shop promotion! In case you missed it, you can read the whole blog here.
To summarize, Petfinder has designated the third week in September “Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable Pet Week” to raise awareness about animals in our nation’s shelters and rescues who need a little extra help finding the right home.  What pets are considered “less-adoptable” or are often overlooked? Amazing pets that fall into these categories:

  • Adult Cats (over 9 mos. old)
  • Big Dogs (over 40 lbs.)
  • Black Pets
  • Pit Bulls, Chihuahuas, and Their Mixes
