Having a dog in your life is rewarding. Adopting a dog and saving a life is even more rewarding. Shelters, rescues and humane-model pet stores are chock full of every kind of best friend imaginable - from Chihuahuas to pit bulls and everything in between – there truly is a pet out there for everyone. You know you want a dog! Here are five reasons to get off the fence, adopt, and join the Dog Nation!

1.)  A dog is good for your mental health.

Studies show that the companionship of a dog can help combat stress, depression, and even PTSD.

2.) Ditto for your physical health.

Having a dog around forces you to get out of the house and get some air and some exercise. If you have an active lifestyle, your dog can even accompany you on a hike, a run, or a bike ride.

3.) Dogs are great for your social life.

When you’re walking your dog around your neighborhood, you will meet people with whom you would otherwise never speak. At the dog park, you will encounter people who you already have much in common with as pet lovers, which makes ice-breaking conversations easier.

4.) You will instantly become more attractive.

In a study conducted by Anthrozoos: A Multidisciplinary Journal of The Interactions of People & Animals, “people appear happier, safer, and make a better “picture” when seen with a dog.”

5.) You will always have someone who loves you.

No matter how rotten your day went, at the end of it will be waiting your faithful companion, and things will instantly get better.

So what are you waiting for? Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and we hope you will!), is to get out there and save a life by adopting your next dog. Go! Adopt!

I haven’t had a dog for 30 years. Now, I have 3 dogs and 1 cat. The dogs are all over 50 lbs and I’m allergic to my cat, but I love all of them! What took me so long to realize how wonderful they are. I even waited until I was 50 years old to get married. My whole family is shocked!!!
